AdvocacyAdvocateWe need your help to heal two million people in Clark County! We are hopeful that residents, social service partners and the business community will rally to support vital programs at a time when they are most needed to transform lives. State budget cuts force CCTA to diversify funding immediately, building a strong network of supporters. CCTA’s government support has been cut from 76 to 31%, requiring immediate increases with more facility contracts, grants, contributions, events, private pay, and collaboration with colleagues who bill Medicaid, Medicare and insurance plans. CCTA is developing alternate funding sources to meet national standards: Nevada is both ahead and behind the times. Past advocacy efforts resulted in CCTA growing six times larger with programs, budget and staff. Because Nevada loses all music therapy students to other states’ degree programs, CCTA must import all certified therapists. Significant state support allowed that to happen. Senate Bill 579 (FY07-09) appropriated $109,590 for music therapy equipment statewide with CCTA accessing $58,815. And the Nevada Department for Health and Human Services awarded CCTA a two-year $272,804 (FY08-10) grant to benefit people with disabilities. Help us continue 3,000 programs annually by meeting national funding standards. The American Music Therapy Association reports (2009) music therapy services are funded in many states by insurance plans (4%), special education (8%), Medicaid/Medicare (8%), private pay (19%), facility and hospital budgets (13%), grants/endowments (18%), and other/government funds (30%). School FundingHelp increase demand in Nevada by requesting music therapy through your insurance carrier, requesting a referral for a music therapy assessment at your child’s IEP meeting, or advocate for music therapy with the State of Nevada’s departments supporting people with disabilities and mental health. CCTA is currently advocating for music therapy services through Clark County School District, one of the largest in the country, with over 300 schools and over 270,000 students of diverse ethnicities, and over 30,000 special education students. With the assistance of the MGM Mirage VOICE Foundation, CCTA is creating significance for music therapy with at-risk students who benefit from programs at four schools, before and during school. The goal: Clark County School District joins the national standard in funding music therapy programs. Medicaid WaiversPlease contact your Assemblyman and Senator who sit on the Human Services, Education and Finance Committees to urge approval for Medicaid waivers including music therapy services statewide FY09-011.
